The construction of The Valley Lake Lookout and viewing platform was completed November, and has become a valuable outdoor amenity for a young community and is a key feature of the Valley Lake estate. The lookout provides panoramic views across the basalt clifftop of the former Niddrie Quarry, well as the Melbourne cityscape.
The 80m elevated and cantilevered boardwalk which overlooks the Valley Lake area was part of the rejuvenation of the 48-hectare site by Development Victoria. Works involved detailed excavation and piling to provide a stable platform for the custom steel structure. Structural & feature concrete walls with woodgrain off-form finish and stamped concrete paths were also constructed, as part of the design intent to connect the boardwalk with the exposed rock faces of the quarry. Feature lighting was installed to provide both nighttime access and showcasing of raked concrete walls at ‘The Cutting’.
The project won the Victorian Small Projects Award at the 2018 (AILA) Victorian Landscape Architecture Awards.
